My Great-Grandma Rose was an enormous inspiration to me. Shelieved in education for all and felt that women should go to college and have a career before it was common in the United States. She went to college in the early 1900's when the college population was dominated by men. While higher education today is expected of both men and women, during the early 1900's, women were expected to be at home cooking, cleaning and taking care of the family rather then getting a full education. My grandmother believed that women should have educational opportunities, just like men. She went to school to become a teacher and a nutritionist. It was a goal that she had, and she completed this in spite of the challenges that she had from simply being a woman.
I wear
or keep my grandmother's bracelet visible in my room so I can remember the
strength and independence she had in order to fulfill her dream. In fact, she
passed the educational priority down from generation to generation and still
exists in my family today. Partly because of her, we realize that education is
a privilege, and something you must never give-up on.
